'The Heart Athletes' is a Chester based musical collective formed in 2017 to write and play original songs about this theatre of cruelty we call life. The name is taken from the writings of the French actor, director, writer and poet Antonin Artaud. (From An Affective Athleticism, 1935).

We focused on live performances during 2018, our first gig was at The Saddle Inn, Chester on Valentines Day, 14th February 2018.

During 2019 we have concentrated on video work collaborating with the legendary director Steven Berkoff and producing trailers for his films 'Decadence', 'Oedipus' and 'Salome'.

On the 1st January 2020 we released a special playlist on YouTube containing all three Steven Berkoff trailers 'Decadence', 'Oedipus' and 'Salome'.

"“Decadence is a study of two forms of English wildlife, the upper class and the working class. Each has its beloved rituals, habits and traditions which both groups are devoted to and which determine their every course of action.

It is all about excess, taking an idea to its limit so it exists on the edge of dissolution before it destroys itself. In fact where the best theatre should lie, on the edge of our human experience and as far as we dare to go and then there is a point of no return." - Steven Berkoff.

"I've always been drawn to epic stories. Stories that deal with life and death, universal themes that affect all of mankind. Oedipus is the crowning glory for anyone seeking to create theatre, who want to use a theatre as a place to heighten our understanding of the human condition – not a place to sit and see someone standing behind a kitchen sink washing dishes. The Nottingham Playhouse and the Liverpool Everyman take bold artistic choices in the way they programme their work and consequently their audiences are used to sharing in work that is demanding, unremitting and unique in its foundation. Theatres with such vision make a good home for our work and we enjoy working with them." - Steven Berkoff.
